Short answer

What is an electrofusion welding machine?

An electrofusion welding machine joins plastic pipes through an electrofusion fitting: it puts the wire embedded in the fitting under voltage. Pipe and fitting turn plastic, and the melt pressure that builds up closes the gap. The process is called electrofusion welding and is governed by DVS 2207-1.

This is not socket fusion, where a heated spigot warms pipe and fitting from the outside — a different tool for small PP-R pipework.

Which family of machines applies is decided by the welding voltage of the fitting. Electrofusion fittings for pressure pipelines run on 8 to 48 volts and carry a barcode to ISO 13950. Fittings for HDPE building drainage are welded directly at 230 volts. Only within the family does the diameter decide: this page covers five Ritmo machines spanning Ø 20 to 1,600 mm.

Terms

Electrofusion or socket fusion?

The same thing or not? Electrofusion welding and EF welding mean one single process – “socket welding” can mean three. All three sit in the same guideline, DVS 2207-1, and that is where the confusion comes from. What separates them is where the heat comes from.

For the machine it is one and the same word. Electrofusion welding machine, EF welder, electrofusion welder and electrofusion unit all mean the same machine. The same goes for the part: electrofusion fitting, EF fitting, electrofusion coupler and electric socket all mean the fitting with an embedded wire and contact sockets of Ø 4.0 or 4.7 mm.

This is not about steel. In steel pipework a socket weld fitting is something else entirely – a different process on a different material. This page is about plastic pipes in PE and PP only.

All five machines on this page use the first process – electrofusion welding. If you are looking for a heated-tool machine for PP-R pipework, this is the wrong page.

What it does

What the machine takes off you – and what stays handwork

An electrofusion welding machine takes four things off the welder. One it does not – and that one decides the joint.

The parameters

The ISO 13950 barcode on the fitting carries welding voltage and welding time. The machine reads them in and factors in the ambient temperature – nothing to type in, nothing to look up.

The brand of the fitting

On the machines for pressure pipe it is not the make that decides but the fitting itself: 8 – 48 V and an ISO 13950 barcode are enough. The 90° universal adapter Ø 4.0 / 4.7 mm supplied fits the usual contact pins, brand-specific adapter sets are not needed. In building drainage it is the other way round – there the cable decides the brand.

The record

Elektra S, M and XL each store 8,000 welding reports, output as PDF or BIN. Anyone who has to document for the client has nothing extra to do.

The monitoring

Current and voltage are read throughout the welding time. If anything deviates, the machine aborts the cycle and reports what went wrong – instead of producing a joint that looks finished from the outside.

What stays handwork

Scraping, cleaning, clamping. The machine does not check whether the oxide layer is off and whether the pipe sits free of stress – it welds what is put in front of it. That is why the preparation has two sheets of its own.

Two worlds that will not mix. One takes its parameters from the barcode on the fitting, the other from the brand-specific cable – with everything that hangs on it: medium, material, documentation.

Note

No machine serves both worlds. An Elektra will not weld a Geberit fitting, and a Mustang will not weld a FRIALEN pressure-pipe fitting. The welding logic is a different one – not just the voltage.

The Elektra 315 covers the same range as the Elektra M but is the older generation – it appears in the register and in the data sheet, yet is not recommended here. Whether the Elektra Light reaches Ø 160 mm depends on the make of fitting; Ritmo states Ø 125/160 mm.

Electrofusion welding to DVS 2207

The sequence in electrofusion welding is always the same. What the machine takes off your hands is setting the parameters – the preparation stays manual work. And that is what decides the joint.

Only step 5 heats the coil to welding temperature, which is held for the welding time. Step 6 is the cooling time, during which the assembly must not be moved.   1. 01

    Scraping

    Remove the oxide layer over the full insertion depth. No scraping, no joint – we work with a rotary scraper because it removes material evenly.

  2. 02

    Cleaning

    Degrease the welding zone with PE cleaner and let it flash off. Do not touch it afterwards – every hand carries a film of grease that can weaken the joint.

  3. 03

    Clamping

    Insert the pipe ends up to the mark, align them free of stress and secure them in the clamp. Movement during the cooling time destroys the joint.

  4. 04

    Scanning

    Read the barcode to ISO 13950. The machine takes over voltage and welding time and allows for the ambient temperature. The cooling time CT is stated alongside.

  5. 05

    Welding

    Start the cycle. Current and voltage are monitored throughout; on deviation the machine aborts and reports the cause.

  6. 06

    Cooling & report

    Observe the cooling time of the fitting, and only then release the clamp. Save the report or export it as PDF/BIN – that makes the joint traceable.

What the joint needs beforehand

Steps 04 to 06 are handled by the machine. Steps 01 to 03 stay manual work – and that is what decides the joint. Four groups from our range.

Scraping

Step 01 · Oxide layer

The oxide layer has to come off over the full insertion depth – evenly and without scoring. For that we use rotary scrapers throughout: they guide the blade along the pipe and keep the cut even around the whole circumference.

Cleaning

Step 02 · Degreasing

After scraping, the welding zone is degreased and left to flash off. Cleaner and wipe belong together: whatever fibres the wipe leaves behind end up in the joint.

Clamping

Step 03 · Holding

Insert both pipe ends free of stress and hold them until the cooling time has elapsed. Movement during that time destroys the joint – which is why the clamp holds it, not your hand.

Step 05 · Site

With no mains supply, the machine runs off a generator. Ritmo states 3.5–4 kVA for the Elektra Light and 5.5–6 kVA, frequency-stable for the Elektra 315. Large fittings draw high starting currents – one size up is the cheaper decision.

What decides is the welding voltage of the fitting, not the pipe diameter. Electrofusion fittings for pressure pipelines work at 8 – 48 V and carry an ISO 13950 barcode. That is what the Elektra line is for.

HDPE building drainage – soil and waste – is welded with machines that work directly off the 230 V mains; the parameters come from the brand-specific welding cable. That is what the Mustang 160 V2 and Universal 315 V1 are for. The two worlds cannot be served by the same machine.

Yes. What matters is not the make but the fitting itself: if it works at 8 – 48 V welding voltage and carries an ISO 13950 barcode, the machine reads the parameters and welds. That applies to the common electrofusion fittings for pressure pipelines.

The supplied universal adapter 90° Ø 4.0 / 4.7 mm fits the usual terminal pins. Brand-specific adapter sets are not needed with the Elektra line.

Elektra Light and Elektra S: 3.5 – 4 kVA.
Elektra M and Elektra 315: 5.5 – 6 kVA, frequency-stable – large fittings draw considerably more at start-up.
Elektra XL: 6.5 – 7 kVA.
Mustang 160 V2 and Universal 315 V1: Ritmo states no generator recommendation for the drainage line; both run off a normal 230 V socket.

As a rule: better one size up than tightly sized. A generator that dips will break off the welding cycle with it.

Elektra Light: 325 cycles · Elektra 315: 500 · Elektra S, M and XL: 8,000 each. In the drainage line the Universal 315 V1 stores 350 reports; the Mustang 160 V2 does not produce any as standard.

Export is as PDF or BIN. On the Elektra Light the optional DB9M-USB cable is required for this.

With the Universal 315 V1, five cables are supplied: A00 (yellow, Ø 32–160 mm), A00+ (black, Ø 200–315 mm), A01 (blue), A02 (red) and A04 (white), each for Ø 200–315 mm. Cable A05 (brown, Ø 20–63 mm, PP-R) is available on request.

With the Mustang 160 V2, Ritmo states that one welding cable with 90° pins is supplied. Which make your cable needs to cover is something we clarify before ordering — give us a call.

With GPS, every weld gets its coordinate in the report. On network sites with hundreds of joints this makes it possible to prove later which connection lies where – without a separate survey.

Surcharge: Elektra M + GPS 1,889.00 € instead of 1,729.00 €, Elektra XL + GPS 2,449.00 € instead of 2,299.00 € (net).

Electrofusion welding is covered by DVS 2207-1 (PE) and DVS 2207-11 (PP). Automatic parameter transfer follows ISO 13950, traceability of the components ISO 12176-4 and that of the fusion operator ISO 12176-3.

These standards do not replace the processing instructions of the fitting manufacturer. For gas and drinking water mains a valid qualification of the operator is additionally required; the DVGW code of practice GW 330 serves as proof of this.

Yes. Cooling time is part of electrofusion welding just as it is part of butt fusion – it is simply less obvious. In butt fusion the pipe stays under joining pressure in the machine; here the joint cools without pressure, and nothing holds up the sequence.

The fitting manufacturer specifies two times. The first is given as CT on the barcode label and states when the joint may be moved – until then it is neither pulled nor backfilled. The second is considerably longer and states when the line may be put under test or operating pressure.

Both values depend on the diameter and design of the fitting and are given in the processing instructions of the respective make. The Elektra machines display the cooling time and count it down. Before commissioning there is the pressure test anyway, to EN 805, EN 12007 or DVGW G 469 and W 400.

Yes, for part of the range: we rent out Elektra Light, Elektra M, Elektra XL and Universal 315 V1. Elektra M and XL each in the basic version – the versions with GPS/Glonass are not available for rent.
